5.000 Menschen aus den 54 afrikanischen Ländern fotografieren – das ist das Ziel von Fotokünstler Nkole Helzle. Er lebt und arbeitet auf der Schwäbischen Alb, mit dem Schwerpunkt auf Fotografie, Video und Installationen. Seit Anfang des Jahres 2021 arbeitet er an seinem neuen Fotoprojekt “Face(s) of Africa”, bei dem er aus vielen Einzelporträts ein kollektives Gesicht formt. Auf diese Weise möchte er Afrika ein Gesicht geben. Die Teilnehmer*innen sollen das Gefühl bekommen, Teil von etwas Großem zu sein. Um dieses Projekt umzusetzen braucht es aber nicht nur den Künstler, sondern auch Unterstützer*innen. Managerohnegrenzen fördert das Kunstprojekt, indem wir unsere Projektpartner*innen aus verschiedenen Teilen Afrikas anfragen und unsere Kontakte an Nkole Helzle weitervermitteln.
Seine Idee, tausende Menschen eines ganzen Kontinents zu porträtieren, hat sich erst während der Corona–Pandemie gefestigt. Aufgrund der Reisebeschränkungen konnte Nkole Helzle 2020 nicht wie gewohnt auf Reisen gehen und die Menschen vor Ort fotografieren. Seit 25 Jahren fotografiert er verschiedene Länder und Kulturen und hat seitdem über 50.000 Menschen aufgenommen. Normalerweise reist er mit seinem mobilen Fotostudio zu verschiedenen Plätzen, Ausstellungen und Festivals. In vielen seiner Arbeiten werden Zuschauer*innen, Gäst*innen und Besucher*innen Teil des künstlerischen Prozesses. Da all das seit der Corona–Pandemie nicht mehr umsetzbar ist, musste eine andere Lösung gefunden werden. So entwickelte er verschiedene Computer-Formate, mit denen die entsprechenden Porträts online und offline aufgenommen werden können. Nkole Helze konnte so seine Möglichkeiten und seinen Bewegungsradius enorm erweitern. Sein Ziel es, bei dem Projekt “Face(s) of Africa” bis zu 100 Personen aus jedem afrikanischen Land zu fotografieren.
Ein zentrales Thema des Künstlers ist die Frage nach der Beziehung zwischen Individuum und Kollektiv. “Die Arbeit besteht immer daraus, dass sowohl das individuelle Gesicht gewürdigt wird, als auch das daraus resultierende Gesicht der Gruppe!” – Nkole Helzle
Wir haben unsere aktuellen und ehemaligen Projektpartner*innen in Tansania, Kenia, Togo, Kamerun, Ghana und vielen weiteren Ländern angefragt, ob sie sich an dem Kunstprojekt beteiligen wollen. Dabei können unsere Partner*innen direkt an dem Projekt teilnehmen oder uns Kontakte von Organisationen, Schulen oder anderen Gruppen weiterleiten. Die ersten Rückmeldungen sind bereits eingetroffen und wir freuen uns Nkole Helzle bei seinem Projekt “Face(s) of Africa” unterstützten zu können.
Bereits 2005 hat er ein ähnliches Fotoprojekt in Lusaka in Sambia umgesetzt. Während seines 14-tägigen Aufenthalts hat er 550 Personen fotografiert. Auch dort hat er aus den Einzelporträts ein Gesamtbild geschaffen. Seitdem hat er die Vision ein weiteres Projekt in Verbindung mit dem afrikanischen Kontinent umzusetzen. Sein Aufenthalt in Sambia hat ihm in vielen Bereichen die Augen geöffnet und er möchte die tiefe Wertschätzung und Augenhöhe, die er bei den damaligen Begegnungen empfunden hat, weiterhin sichtbar machen.
Das Fotoprojekt “Face(s) of Africa” von Nkole Helzle läuft bis 2022 und wir freuen uns ein Teil davon zu sein!

Photographing 5.000 people from the 54 african countries – that is the goal of photo artist Nkole Helzle. He lives and works in the Swabian Alb, with focus on photography, video and installations. Since the beginning of 2021, he has been working on his new photo project „Face(s) of Africa“, in which he forms a collective face from many individual portraits. In this way he wants to give Africa a face. The participants should get the feeling of being part of something big. In order to realize this project, not only the artist is needed, but also supporters. Managerswithoutborders promotes the art project by asking our project partners from different parts of Africa and passing on our contacts to Nkole Helzle.
His idea of portraying thousands of people from an entire continent only solidified during the Corona pandemic. Due to travel restrictions, Nkole Helzle was not able to travel and photograph the people on the ground as usual in 2020. He has been photographing different countries and cultures for 25 years and has photographed over 50.000 people since then. He usually travels with his mobile photo studio to different places, exhibitions and festivals. In many of his works, spectators, guests and visitors become part of the artistic process. Since all this is no longer feasible since the Corona pandemic, another solution had to be found. So he developed various computer formats with which the corresponding portraits can be recorded online and offline. Nkole Helze was thus able to enormously expand his possibilities and his range of motion. His goal is to photograph up to 100 people from each african country in for the „Face(s) of Africa“ project.
A central theme of the artist is the question of the relationship between the individual and the collective. „The work always consists of appreciating, both the individual face and the resulting face of the group!“ – Nkole Helzle
We have asked our current and former project partners in Tanzania, Kenya, Togo, Cameroon, Ghana and many other countries if they would like to participate in the art project. Our partners can participate directly in the project or give us contacts from organizations, schools or other groups, which want to join. The first feedbacks have already arrived and we are happy to support Nkole Helzle in his project „Face(s) of Africa“!
Already in 2005 he realized a similar photo project in Lusaka in Zambia. During his 14-day stay he photographed 550 people. There, he also created an overall picture from the individual portraits. His stay in Zambia has opened his eyes in many areas and he would like to continue to make visible the deep appreciation and eye level he felt during the encounters at that time.
